So all this talk of dreamwidth in Tumblr made me nostalgic, so I'm mostly writing this to manifest the Great Return of Fandom 2022. Pretty please.

So, hello, DW. It's been like, a decade.

comments

well tumblr has exploded and it's a right blast from the past to end out here. hooray?

would be so okay with fandom coming back home here though, so here's hoping for more years of fic, bad television, good meta of bad television and hopefully less purity policing.

comments

Oh, the pining

I wrote a thing! I wrote a LONG thing actually, and it is Steve/Bucky and it involves practice kissing and Bucky pining like an idiot and them making out during wartime. Yay!

400 words more and it would've been the longest thing I've ever written! Alas, it capped at 11,000 words. Of PINING.

And it’s just. It’s too much. Weeks of pain and months of missing Steve and his mouth and the stupid shit that comes out of it; years of molding himself to his back at night and pretending there’s nothing else to it apart from sharing warmth; a decade of his stomach twisting with the foolish desire to make Steve laugh.

:D

comments

KISSING. ALL THE KISSING.

It takes him by surprise, and he barely has time to register Bucky’s half-closed eyes and the warmth of whiskey-ripe breath on his lips, before it’s over.

:D

comments

Started reading The Magicians by Lev Grossman. I’ve heard… conflicting reviews about this. My Harry Potter and Peter Grant deprived head wants more magic books, but I’m 50 pages in and I already hate the stupid douchebag of a protagonist. Oh god I’m a well-off white male teenager being offered a ride to Princeton and everyone friendzones me! I’m so very, very unhappy! Eh. I’ll see if it gets better.

It has recently come to my attention that all of Marvel’s Chrises (plus one Chris Pine) are all Christophers. Is Christian as a name not popular in English-speaking countries then? Because my Mexican brain didn’t even think of Christopher as a possibility.

And so the week of wanting to be in Comic-Con and definitely not being in Comic-Con begins. SIGH. But hey, we’re finishing work earlier to do choripanes! Because - just because, it seems. And it’s not like I’m gonna oppose having argentinean bbqs instead of working.

comments

Going through the Dashcon tag seriously gave me life this weekend, and gave me hardcore flashbacks to the wanky days of fandom of novel-length BNF exposés. SIGH. I think the fantastically sad ball pit was the best part. I mean. IT DEFLATED. Hee.

I do feel bad for all the conned con goers (heh), especially as most of them seem to be kids, but god, did I laugh and laugh and laugh. BALL PIT. WE SHALL NEVER FORGET. XD

So the World Cup is over and while for the main part I don’t give a damn about football, I really like the excitement, atmosphere and craziness around it, so it’s a cool time. One of my bosses and my creative director are argentinean, so they’re sort of shuffling around today and refusing to talk about it, lol.

comments

My parents got a treadmill! and it's built in a way I can put my tablet on it, so now I can exercise and watch mindless tv shows at the same time. SCORE.

So in that vein, I'm almost done with Arrow season 1. It's been more enjoyable since there hasn't been any island flashbacks. I fucking hate the island flashbacks. What's gonna be there next, flying monkeys? Flying ninja monkeys?? Everyone's a damned ninja there, I wouldn't put it out of the question.

I've always been really, really weirded out at how boring I find Laurel. I mean, she's a plucky, daring lawyer who sticks out for people who can't! She's like, the very definition of my kind of beloved character! And yet I find her super dull. I DON'T GET IT. I mean, Katie Cassidy is not the world's greatest actress, but she was actually pretty entertaining as Ruby? WHAT HAPPENED. Ah well.

In any case, Felicity was recently undercover in a casino putting her foot in her mouth and everything is beautiful and nothing hurts.

comments

It’s seriously really weird, but I’m super attracted to Mark Ruffalo - except when he’s Bruce Banner or being himself. He’s - sort of Dad-ish as himself, and Bruce is… Bruce Banner, and doesn’t ping my radar, but in every single other movie he’s ever made? OH YES. Especially in Brothers Bloom, oh my, ngggh. Even in Now You See Mee, which was a craptastic movie, he’s there to bring the hotness. It’s so damn bizarre.

So anyway, I understand north of the border there’s like a tiny celebration or something. I think Eagles and fireworks are involved. Have a good one, folks from the US.

comments

So you should all go read this, for it is beautiful and so well written and a bit devastating. Peggy/Steve, Bucky/Steve. In which Steve jumps out of Shmidt's plane, marries Peggy, and has life and the 20th century happen to him. And life is hard.

A Long Winter

I've seriously been replaying bits of this in my head for hours, it was just really striking.

comments

Yesterday’s Mexico match was crazy tense. One of my coworkers is the most football obsessed person I’ve ever met, and he seemed close to a goddamn heart attack. The memes about Saint Memo of the Goal were the best part though.

There’s now a second dog at work now! DOGGIES. They spend their days rough housing and chasing each other and rolling around in dirt and puddles. It’s so awesome.

Currently reading The Song of Achilles. I swear, this woman has to be writing fic somewhere out there. Probably about her own book. AWESOME. Seriously though, it does have the same sort of cadence as good fic in current fandom does, and I would not be surprised at all to find out she’s somewhere out there on the AO3. So, yeah, the book is all right so far. I do wish it was less coy with the sex scenes though…

Even though I don’t usually do the meme, it’s Wednesday, so:
What I just read: The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August, which was pretty good, though it had some rough patches, and it had the potential to be great, which wasn’t quite fulfilled. Basically, it had such a cool plot, tarnished by the boring white dudes chosen to be narrator and villain.

comments

So you should all do yourselves a favor and watch In the Flesh, for it is lovely and amazing and deep and funny and has great music. I mean, it has zombies, human defense militias, complicated politics, a queer main character, cuckoo undead prophets, sleepy English town drama and adorable Northern accents, what else could you want?

Crossing my fingers and toes and dunno what else for it to get a third season. ♥

Also, dude playing Kieren has the most awesome huge eyes ever, I seriously thought they had him on those extra big iris japanese contacts at first! So he's super cute, and I spent pretty much every scene with Maxine in it thinking 'goddamn, this woman is so gorgeous'. All the shows for her.

comments

oh idris elba, come save these poor lost souls

Went to see The Grand Budapest Hotel on Friday and it was absolutely charming and adorable and funny and amazing. So recommended.
On Saturday I saw Godzilla, which was… ok. Mostly it made me wanna watch Pacific Rim again, so I did. Ah, Pacific Rim. So awesome. So exciting. ♥

Anyway, so, Godzilla - the monster bits were cool enough that i didn’t feel cheated (that first glimpse at Godzilla was so rad), but all of the human bits were so boring. Also, all they made Ken Watanabe do was look around confused. So, so confused. Poor Ken Watanabe.

Then again, I have a massive soft stop for the 90s movie. So bad. So good.

comments

COMICS. Y SO HARD.

I was about to order This One Summer by Mariko and Jillian Tamaki, because some comics deserve to be read physically, and I thought, what the hell, let's get some more. I've long wanted to complete my collection of Brian Michael Bendis' run on Daredevil, but it's out of print and it was only when I ordered from three party vendors that I realized they were charging fucking 35 dlls in shipping for a 10 dlls book. WHAT. NO.

I backtracked pretty fast. So I'm ordering Nextwave even though it's unavailable at the moment, but that comes from Amazon and the shipping is like 5 dlls. For whenever it comes, I guess. Also getting some Fables trades. I'm so so behind on Fables, I suck.

UGH. Why are comics so expensive? Why do I earn so little? I really wanna support the new Black Widow series, too, but the trade isn't coming out until July, boo. I dislike paying 4dlls for a single issue with shitty paper and ads enough, I'm so not paying that for digital.

comments

I read this fic yesterday and it just about broke me. Fucking hell, this is so damn gorgeous and well written. READ IT. NOW.

(Bucky/Steve, It's harder than Steve ever expected to bring Bucky home.)

The movie is getting a bunch of well-deserved praise, but the OST is going sadly ignored - it’s such a lovely, well-fitting score. I’ve been listening to it a bunch on spotify. Keep Henry Jackman for Cap, please. Now they just have to hire Ramin Djawadi for Iron Man again (that first movie score was brilliant) and we’ll be set.

We moved to a new office on Friday and it’s all been exhausting. I mean, both the moving and the settling down again too, but mostly the fact that my computer broke or something in the move and while it’s getting fixed I have to repeat all of my files and lost a lot of work I’d already started on that had to be handed in today. So yesterday was crazy busy. But! The work puppy seems to be enjoying the new space to roam!

*That’s from the old office. I haven’t actually taken a photo of the dog roaming the new patio yet. This is false advertisement, I know.

comments

I went to see CATWS again last night and like half the theatre went OMG GASP!! when Bucky
was revealed. DID NO ONE EVEN WATCH THE TRAILERS?? The girl beside me went ‘It’s his frieeeeend!!’ and I giggled a bit. Anyway, it was probably even more fun on the second viewing. :3

comments

Ridiculous fangirl problems are feeling personally betrayed at the bad quality of the cam version you get of CATWS by dubious means. Damnit. I’ll just go watch it again on Wednesday, what the hell.

I’ve spent the last two weeks in a Bucky/Steve fic stupor. IT’S BEEN GREAT. So much good fic! So easy to find! After losing interest completely in Teen Wolf I jumped to Star Trek AOS fic, and after reading all the brilliant 2009 fic in existence I was left scraping the bottom of the barrel. The last fic I read started out so well and then descended into every single early 2000s fic cliche that it could think of, and then I finally quit when the sudden need arose for Kirk and Spock to go undercover in a gay club dressed in leather pants and eyeliner in the middle of an intergalactic war. Ugh.

Also, and going back to Marvel, how much do I not want avengers 3 to be civil war, PLEASE NO. It made Tony act like the biggest asshole (which HE'S NOT) and it basically took the movies for people to like him again and NO. JUST. WORLD OF NO. (I actually didn't hate Civil War, just the fallout, and then stupid secret invasion made it pointless anyway and the neverending events even more. It just doesn't fit into the movies universe. And you can't have Steve's death without his comeback and that would take another movie and ugh, no, better just stay away.)

comments

Gabriel García Márquez passed away today. It sound really cliche, but he sort of did affect my life deeply in a way I didn't really realize until much later. Instead of reading age appropriate books to us, my 6th grade teacher decided to read his short story anthology to us, Doce Cuentos Peregrinos, though she did skip over the racy bits. It was seriously enchanting - I remember how we all freaked out with the one about a lady that goes to use the phone in a madhouse and then no one believes her, and picturing the boys swimming in light in La luz es como el agua scared me and resonated with me deeply.

She never told us who we were reading though, so finding the book years and years later after I had already fell in love with A Hundred Years of Solitude was a bit like a gift. I had always loved reading, well before that amazing teacher, but that was sort of my first taste of adult literature, and without it I'm sure I wouldn't have gone through the same path of books.

So farewell, Gabo, and thank you so much.

---

In different but sort of related news, I've been listening to Chamber of Secrets on my nightly walks these past few weeks. I'd forgotten how charmingly funny JK Rowling can be!

I had also forgotten, however, how everything the Dursleys do to Harry would get them convicted for child abuse in, well, everywhere, really. There's a lot of talk about Petunia's talk to Harry in Deathly Hallows and how she was denied being redeemed in the movie, but reading it now, holy shit, screw her sadness, that does not deny a decade of neglect, hunger and verbal abuse. I think by then we'd all sort of forgotten about the early days of HP, and we just saw a seriously surprisingly well adjusted almost adult that could no longer be hurt by the Dursleys, instead of the little boy living under the stairs.

I started reading Harry Potter at age 12 - at that age, a child getting treated like that was like normal stuff in children's books, very dickensian and all, how all adults were all naturally mean and cruel and not to be trusted (don't give me that look, think about any book with a kid protagonist and the signs will be there). Reading it (listening to it, whatever) as an adult, that shit is just not ok, and is probably a lot more disturbing to read. I remember that I once tried to get my mom to start reading the first book, a few days before OotP was about to come out, and just gave it back after a chapter, pretty angry, because Harry was being treated so badly and couldn't read anymore. I hadn't thought of that in years...

comments

all it was missing was a slow pan out of Steve's ass. Sigh.

I finally got to see Captain America, I loved it and can't wait to go watch it again! Natasha wins everything, and the expected Steve/Bucky reunion didn’t disappoint, and then oh, my heart, that last scene after the credits! So pumped up for fic now :D

I read Divergent on Sunday, because despite knowing that I tend to be disappointed by YA*, I saw the trailer and was interested. I mean, it was all right, but I get tired of the first person ‘oh i’m such a special snowflake’ narrative. Show, don’t tell. But really there’s such a huge suspension of disbelief with these dystopias - there’s no way that people would allow the systematic murder of their children on tv for almost a century, or that people would split themselves into who likes being friends and who likes to get piercings. That’s not how the real world works. The Handmaiden’s Tale, for example, is also quite hard to believe being allowed to happen (although it’s sadly more possible), but of course Margaret Atwood is Margaret Atwood and at least within the novel it feels very plausible in a visceral way.

I was - or still am, I supposed - reading the Veronica Mars novel, but out of nowhere, BAM, Mexican cartels. I see enough of that shit in real life, thanks, so I’ve sort of put it down for now. Veronica Mars just works better as a visual medium, anyway.

*It’s not so much the genre or the weird trends, but the dry writing and easy plots that usually let me down. They’re teenagers, not dumb. They can stand some pretty writing in their books.

comments

Have you guys been following Kate Beaton's new sketch comic, Ducks, Ducks, Ducks?

I thought it was really beautiful, in a sad, quietly despairing way. It's really powerful for a sketchy comic about day to day life.

comments
