So, should I get a cat? Anyone has any stories/advice/tips/what have you for someone that's never had a cat and only had dogs for months in childhood?

I went to a tiny adoption fair today and I fell in love with a gorgeous kitty that just let me hold him for like 20 minutes without even complaing once. At the same time though, I feel pretty daunted by the idea of being wholy responsible for a little being for the rest of its life.

But I've wanted a cat for years and years and years...

Cats are hell on curtains, I have to say. We bought new curtains (the cats had partially destroyed the old ones but they were actually 30 years old) and since we needed new fittings for them, we had someone come to install them. The guy was a thorough cat hater, and told us if we like our curtains we should get rid of the cats! We did not get rid of the cats, but our new curtains do have little puncture holes in them now. OTOH, my cats are Tonkinese cats which are unusually active cats - it's usually kittens who do this. You could probably adopt an adult cat without worries about the curtains.
