When the boy and I had just gotten to Cancun on Tuesday, my mom called me to let me know that one of my favorite teachers of all time, Roger Chatman, had been found dead, possibly murdered. No one knows exactly what happened yet, but apparently he was missing for a few days before, and since he'd just come into a significant inheritance, it points to him being kidnapped.
He was one of the best teachers I've ever had - he would challenge you, and make classes interesting, aside from the fact that he was an amazing and caring human being. I've seriously been in shock since I found out; if he was kidnapped, well, most people that do nowadays get tortured before being killed, and it is so, so very terrifying. If something like that happened to him, who was such a great person, and a regular junior high English teacher - who can be next? Everyone.
Some of my favorite moments of junior high involved his classes or activities (the way we had quizzes involving Beatles songs really loud, or him being unable to pronounce prehistoric names when he taught Mexican History, and when he took the entire class to the Teotihuacan pyramids.) He will be missed, and he deserved much, much better.
