Supernatural 2x01 - In My Time of Dying: OMFG. I really didn't expect such an ending for a season premiere, but the entire episode was really loaded, you know? Thick and important and so. Damn. Good.

I loved the character development in this one. Dean finally screaming at his Dad, finally getting everything off his chest, only because he knows John can't hear him. It says so much about him. His priorities are so clear in this one, family first, hunting second, everything else is just a nuisance in the back of his head.

Sam... Oh, how much I felt about him. He was such a wreck this week *pets him* and John was oh so incredibly crafty and cryptic and OOOOH. Trading his life for Dean's. It breaks my heart, it made me gasp, although I kinda expected it. I can't help but being curious as hell about what he whispered to Dean...

So yeah, that was awesome. Can it be thrursday already?

I really don't get why people hate John so much. Sure, he was the crappiest father ever, but he's such an amazing character, deep and hard to get. *shrug*

He was SO not the crappiest father ever. T_T

He was awesome. He kept his boys alive, and together when his friends called CPS on them, he gave them the skills and tools and confidence to survive in the world they found themselves in, he vanished to draw fire so that the Demon wouldn't go after them, he knew he made mistakes as a parent and tried to right them, and he gave up HIS life and the quest that consumed his life, to his NEMESIS so that his son could live.

He wasn't perfect, but he did the best he could, they turned out okay, and even though he's gone now, I have absolutely no fear that they are in any serious danger, because I KNOW he gave them the skills to look after themselves and each other.

i HEART john. And his parenting.

And I don't think he's hard to get at all. He really has one priority, and everything else feeds off it: to keep the boys safe. Killing the Demon? Keeps the boys safe. Hunting other evil stuff? One less evil thing that can hurt the boys. Ordering them around? He knows best how to keep them safe. Not telling them anything? What they don't know can't hurt them. Bow hunting, shotguns, credit card scams? All skills they need to keep themselves safe.

Im not saying he got it all right, duh, but he is all about his boys. And in my books, that makes him a good father.

But oh, do I love the guy. The way he cares about his boys is so tangible, even if he expresses it in such ways that drives them (Sam, mostly) mad. As you said, he's got his priorities set in stone, which made his deal with the demon the more important.

Oh, damn you. You made me want to write John and wee!brothers fic. Which, you know, isn't such a bad thing. Huh.

Dude, right now at least, I am ALL ABOUT the John. Usually I'm slightly more about the Dean, but right now, Dean who? Sammy who? JOOOOOOOOOOOOOHN.

Sorry if my comment was a little snappy. It drives me nuts that John = bad parent is almost unspoken and assumed in fandom, like no-one's even really thought about it, just gone, "oh yeah, he and Sam fight tons and Dean always follows his orders OMG HE IS A TYRANT."

Yeah, I don't get people's dislike of John either. He did what he had to do, or at least what he thought he had to do, because I don't think he ever felt like he had much of a choice. And he gave up the hunt for Dean! I just - *flails* oh, John. That's totally what got me, because in the past he's shown that his own life doesn't mean all that much to him, but even in the beginning it was the colt and the hunt he was going to give up for his boys.

The thing is, I don't really think he's dead. Or, you know, entirely dead. JDM himself said in an interview after he had been asked if he was going to survive and if he was going to be popping in and out like in last season: "Yeah, I think that's the plan. And I'll live, but, you know, this is Supernatural, so they could kill me... and I wouldn't be dead." I CHOOSE TO BELIEVE IN THIS.
