OH, DOCTOR, I'D MISSED YOU SO.
Doctor Who 4x00 - Voyage of the Damned: A bit corny for my tastes, but it's Christmas so I'll forgive it. And apart from that, it was rather nice, wasn't it?
Also. OH, TEN, YOU SLUT. *cough*
First of all, all I knew before going in was that Kylie was in it. And that was it. Which made it much more enjoyable, I think, and it was quite the surprise. For starters, I loved the premise: aliens, interested by exotic Earth. Awesome! role playing as humans, and trying to celebrate that barbaric date, Christmas! Hee.
I really liked Astrid. I knew the poor thing was doomed the minute the Doctor said she could go with him, because, well, Kylie's got a career, yo. But she was adventurous and sort of a dreamer and all girly girl and the parallelism with all of the earth girls the Doctor picks up that want to see alien planets was just incredible. Even if insta!adoration for the Doctor really is getting old, her having to stand on the aid kid to kiss him was might cute. *g*
May I say that Mr. Tennant looks rather smashing in a tux? Because he does. Um.
The whole nod to the 'okay, yeah, London getting attacked every year is getting ridiculous' thing was all sorts of fun, haha, and while the Titanic was going down? I was totally going 'no way. NO WAY they'd go there. OMG THEY ARE. OMG THEY ARE THEY ARE THEY'RE--NOT. Oh.' lol, the Queen. XD
And the death toll amounts to what? two thousand? my, that's big, even for Who. o_O It was really dark for a Christmas special, wasn't it? I guess it HAD to be, otherwise the parallelisms with the actual Titanic would be hollow. But really, so many nice people died. ;___;
Aaaaand there comes the corny part. My God, those shots in slow-motion after Astrid's death? If they'd be done correctly they could've been gorgeous. As it was, they were just cringe-worthy and the Doctor extending his arms for the, er angel-thingies to fly him up? (man, I can't remember a single name and/or species from this ep, Lord knows why) DO NOT WANT. It was a bit like SPARKLY!JESUS!Doctor all over again, which I never want to see again on my show. But it all went back to normal after that, thank goodness.
It seems like corniness is becoming Rusty's trademark, isn't it? But we got treated to the Moffat only a month ago (even if it was only seven minutes of GLEE and not a proper episode), so I guess we shouldn't complain. (but honestly? I didn't really want him to write an episode in a long, long time. Not after what he did to the S3 finale, Ugh.)
And I liked the ending. Mr. Cooper was surprisingly cool and I'd very much take him as a companion, thank you very much. But still, he was endearing. Oh, and Ten? STOP DELUDING YOURSELF INTO THINKING YOU 'TRAVEL ALONE'. At least have the decency to say you're between companions, for Christ's sake.
ALSO. SHINY TRAILER YAY. SHINY DONNA ALSO, YAY YAY.
ETA: Oh God, just when I thought I couldn't be more surprised and apalled by batchippers (the hardcore ones, the scary ones), they've now gone and BITCHED BITCHED BITCHED about the Doctor "choosing" to kiss Astrid but not Rose. OH FOR-- GET OVER IT ALREADY. And there's someone that's even going "oh, but with her blonde hair and liveliness - she reminds him of Rose! He kissed her because he can't kiss his one true love!!1!eleventy!"

It was indeed very corny. I've never liked Christmas specials much, but this one had its really enjoyable moments. And I loved Mr. Cooper too - he should have been invited for a trip, but of course the Doctor only goes for the young and hot ones *cough*
