Oh, oh, that was Rather Good, wasn't it? :D :D
Doctor Who 4x02 - Fires of Pompeii: Oh, that was good, I wasn't expecting something so solid for the second episode. Let's get the bad out first: I would've done without that last scene. We get it, the Doctor as a god. It was just too cheerful, after everything.
BUT WHATEVER. Because the rest of the episode? NICE. It had really good pacing - it starts rather light, playful, and then it goes up and up in mystery/intrigue/pain. Donna was rather fantastic in it, because just like the Doctor said, he needs someone to get his feet back on the ground.
I really liked the family, they were obvious archetypes but it worked pretty well, you do get attached to them, and the plot was actually pretty interesting this week around. Also, the actual aliens looked good! Maybe I'd just gotten too used to Torchwood's crappy CGI? Those last ten minutes, in short, were rather amazing, with the Doctor having to choose and Donna helping him with it and that lovely, painful conversation in the TARDIS and that final scene overlooking Pompeii - it was touching, it was. Of course, there was no way to make an episode about Pompeei and have it end cheerfully.
ALSO, THE DOCTOR'S WATER PISTOL WAS ACE. IT REALLY, REALLY WAS.
