European folks in my flist!

The, uh, liaison, you could say, between my Uni and Leeds University, just e-mailed me and between some other stuff (oh God the British visa I need to apply and I have to do it in Mexico City oh why, it's 7 hours by bus uuuuugh) he said I need to get this Shengen visa to move around Europe. I'd, uh, never heard about it! When I went to Europe (admitedly, eight years ago) all I had was my passport, and me and my family crossed countries quite merrily and without any fuss.

What do you European people need to get across borders? And people from other places that have backpacked or something, what did you need?

HALP?

(I'm not even sure if I'll be able to go to other countries during the semester (i.e. if I'll have the money), but I want to do it like burning, so I'm not closing that option.)

When I still had a Russian passport, I needed a Schengen visa for European travel; now that I have US citizenship, I can go without. The Wikipedia page actually has a little map for who needs a Schengen visa and who doesn't -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schengen_Agreement#Schengen_visa

Hope that helps!

what do we need to move within the EU, you mean? Just a passport. Although its gotten a lot easier. Last times I went to sweden or poland noone even asked about it. I did get pretty nervous though when I left Sweden for Denmark and forgot my passport. The bus I was in did get checked but I didnt! Which is totally unfair, I guess, but I just look Scandinavian.

However going to England is always a bit more difficult "because they're an island", I just think its rather because.... uh, well, none of my theories now.

But I guess if you re not from the EU things become more difficult.
My former best friend suprisingly made it to England with us, stayed one week, got out of the country again - all without a passport. But that was sheer fucking luck.

Eh? I'd never heard about that. All I need is my ID card or passport, and voila, I can travel everywhere (not only the EU, also Switzerland and Scandinavian countries). And like [livejournal.com profile] i_hate_music says, sometimes they don't even ask you for that: I've travelled between Spain and France several times and I've only been asked for my ID once.

Hmmm, I've never even heard of it. Only ever needed my passport. But then, as I'm already an EU citizen I guess the passport would be all I need.

I got curious and googled it! Sounds like it's just a way of combining all the participating countries' visitor visas into one. (Although I have no idea which countries doing this Shengen thing you'd have otherwise needed individual visas for, what with the whole EU citizen thing...)

Hooray I was somewhat unhelpful :D

L'espace Shengen is a virtual area in Europe where a European can go without any visa. I'm French and I can go to (for example) Belgium, Germany or Spain without any passport or visa, I just cross the border.
Some countries aren't in the Shengen area though like the UK or the newest EU countries. So it seems weird that you need a Shengen visa when you go to the UK...really I don't know

Mmm, mostly it's if I want to leave the country and travel around Europe in weekends, and stuff. I don't know! Some people say I need it and some say I don't! I might get it just in case...
