I should probably stop using facebook to voice my weird semi-philosophical musings, my friends are starting to get somehwat wierded out. Expressing yourself in less than 240 characters has a certain cathartical feeling to it, though.
Now, book time!
I finished reading The Shadow of the Wind about a week ago, and it was just superb, the first book that had really grabbed me for a while. Told with a slightly fantastical feeling, in which anything could happen despite the inherent logic in the book's universe, it's just such an amazing book, and really, I'm a sucker for a mystery story told well. It was also pleasant to read something so good in Spanish, which hadn't happened in a while. I really can't wait to read the author's new book. (Also, it was awesome to be able to sort of recognize the settings, and the book is such a lovely homage to Barcelona, its people and streets.)
Then, I read Girlfriend in a Coma, which I'd wanted to read for ages as I liked the title (eeeeh, Smiths reference! I'm all for that.) I have mixed feelings about this. Most of the book was AWESOME, so so very awesome in fact, going from a mystery to a story about generation X's desinterest in life and the apathy of youth to a freaking fantastic post-apocalyptic setting, and it was going SO GOOD and THEN, out of the sudden, it got PREACHY. Like, quite a lot. I don't know, I felt so CHEATED by the ending, especially as I'd loved all that had come before so much. SIGH. Dunno. The rest was brilliant, though.
I'm reading The Girl Who Played With Fire at the minute, and it's just reminded me how annoying Lisbeth Salander is as a character. It's also annoying how anyone talking about the Millenium series says how she's the most AWESOM and RADICAL character ever concieved, when to my fic-reading mind just reads as the typical goth mary sue that wears IRONIC T-SHIRTS and is so KEWL for it and how everyone is so attracted to her, again because she's so KEWL AND IRONIC and DIFFERENT and shit. She could be SUCH a good character, if the cliches were just taken out and an actual explanation for her passiveness was given. I don't know. It bothers me that the author insists on describing everythig she wears and how she looks to the utmost detail. It just makes it look obvious how he had such a boner for her.
... and now I feel horrible for talking about a dead guy like that. OH WELL.
