You know, if only the emo undercurrent didn't produce such godawful music, it might not be as hated. I mean, every generation has 'emotional' bands and songs, yet their fans were not used as the butt of every joke (much). If you go by the definition of emo as sort of weepy, depressing songs, you have The Smiths in the 80s and Garbage in the 90s. Difference is, their heartache songs are smart, instead of being ZOMG I'LL CUT MYSEEEEELF BECAUSE MY GIRLFRIEND BROKE UP WITH MEEEEE. So, yeah. And they knew about the concept of melody, instead of giving fucking crooning screams.

There would still be the problem of the hot topic black clothes with pictures of people crying or whatever the hell kids like wearing these days and the badly-dyed black hair all over the face and the whiny expression, but hey, The Smiths fans probably once wore ruffled pirate-y shirts and Garbage fans probably had platform shoes. And eyeliner. There has always been some eyeliner. So, moral of the story is, what, write better lyrics and people won't laugh that much of you? Or maybe we will anyway because hardcore emos tend to be loltastic?

Speaking of! Death Cab for Cutie is always talked about as an emo band, and yes, they're a bit whiny (lol) but to me their songs are lovely soft indie for the most part? What do you guys think?

Yeah, they're quite melodic and sweet, good for down-time listening.

Could Panic at the disco be considered emo though? I think emo music and I think screeching, a lot of black clothes and even more (badly-applied) make-up. Panic are very, well, colorful, and almost glam in the way they used to dress before. The glitter was fun. :3 I was thinking more along the lines of tokyo hotel, though I don't think that's quite emo either.

mainly emo just means greasy black hair for me. or bleached hair... never curly.

i dont even know tokyo hotels music. i would have thought itd be too poppy for emo, actually.

i think no one actually knows what emo is supposed to mean music-wise.

Deathcab is totally not Emo, they are indierock for wusses.

I think Brighteyes is Emo, because even though the format of the music changes song-to-song, most of the singing works itself up into an emotional climax, and not one that expresses happiness and satisfaction with life. And it seems like he was right in the middle of a popular kind of Emo, with Cursive and The Faint, Commander Venus.
