Common mistakes about Mexican terms:

It's not tamale. It's tamal, in singular, and tamales in plural.

It's not Montezuma. It's Moctezuma, and it's pretty damn offensive that people repeatedly spell that wrong. No one has ever written Queen Victorria, or something, have they? It's not like it's even the hardest pre-hispanic name to say. (that's probably Coyolxauhqui. Hee. Or Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli.)

MMM, WHAT ELSE. I know there's tons more. OH! Not a term, but: NO SELF-RESPECTING MEXICAN WOULD EVER DRINK THE KIND OF PIRATED TEQUILA WITH A WORM. EVER.

Went over to celebrate my cousin's 14 birthday today. He just broke his wrist two days ago, and is walking around probably cursing his luck of getting a fracture days after the summer holidays started, lol.

Is that even tequila? I always thought that a worm was put into cheap mezcal, but NEVER in tequila.

BTW, at work people now say tamal instead of tamale, because they want to say it properly and I'm oddly touched that they do pay attention to these kind of things.

You know, that's a good question. I've never seen proper tequila with worm, maybe they just sell it as tequila abroad?

That's so cool! I like it when people start getting sensitive after that kind of stuff. My bf said 'so, how's life in south america' when he first met me, and I RAGED, lol. Now he was the first one to tell his sister we're in northamerica, thank you.

I think they way mezcal was marketed to US tourists (and back home) in the 60s and 70s was to confuse tequila with mezcal. I have older friends who have complained about horrible hangovers and generally being sick after drinking tequila in their teens and 20s, but whenever I question them just a little bit it turns out they had mezcal (and cheap mezcal, like Gusano Rojo), not tequila.
