National Geographic is having a special on Octopuses in the memory of Paul the octopus.

THAT'S SO ADORABLE.

Will you be very upset if I say I do not know who Paul the Octopus is?

GASP! You missed out on a very good thing! Paul was an octopus living in an aquarium in Germany that got famous after predicting (and getting right!) 8 big games of the world cup, including the final. The little guy got both death threats from scorned fans and an offering to go live in Spain and be stuffed and propped next to the cup after it was dead!

Really - a magical, fortune telling, taxidermied octopus? Well, I suppose that Punxsutawney Phil is a magical, weather predicting, not-taxidermied-yet, groundhog...and tons of people tune in to watch him every year.... I can see what I was missing ;-)

Oh no no, it was only magical while it lived! It died about a week ago, prompting lots of comments about whether people would it eat to win its magical powers of prediction! But it was just cremated. Aw. It was an ADORABLE octopus, haha.

Was that the one that predicts the start of spring by coming out of its den? I've heard ot if but haven't really seen it in action!

Okay, how would one even begin to taxidermy an octopus? Aren't they, like, almost entirely mucus membrane (or am I thinking of sea cucumbers)? I just...I can kinda see the appeal of the calamari, though. Mmmmm, magical fortune-telling calamari... ;-)

And, yeah, he's the six-more-weeks-of-winter predictor...although, one would think that multiple news crews, cameras, and light rigs (because, yes, 'Good Morning America' is not the only news show to actually devote time in it's programming to stalking a groundhog for weather predictions) would keep any sane critter huddling in his den, and so he wouldn't ever see his shadow at all. Hmm...
