I'm not taking responsibility off Mako but the contrast in fangirl goodwill is pretty mind boggling.

I'm also kind of boggling that fandom will excuse Zuko lying, stealing, burning down villages, helping his sister capture Ba Sing Se (not to mention vilifying Mai for calling him out on his treatment of her in "The Beach") -- but Mako has small-scale problems with honesty and communication, and he's the most objectively evil character ever?
(I mean, I don't excuse him either, especially since he walked away when Asami gave him a chance to explain himself. But I can empathise a lot, not least because he grew up without parents or, apparently, anyone else to model positive relationships for him.)

I don't think Mako even really notices he's screwing up - which isn't great, but happens to the best of them. In a way, he's probably convinced that he's staying sort of away from Korra so he doesn't hurt Asami, while not realising that's exactly what's hurting Asami. Teenagers! Their brains are not fully cooked, after all.
I'm surprised the brothers are as well adjusted as they are, seeing the way they grew up. Well, in a way Bolin's the one that pretty much grew up with Mako as a parent, and Mako was busy raising a kid, so I guess there's that. I really like their relationshop - it's great to see siblings being so unafraid of showing (and telling!) how much they love each other.

I also wonder if he's afraid that if he broke up with Asami now, she'd feel like he was more interested in her money and her father's power. And he said, way back when they first started going out, that she's safe.
(He also said that he likes Korra and Asami. And I don't know about you, but I've never met a teenager capable of recognising and practising polyamory. I mean, that's a challenge for adults!)

He really needs to have a good look at himself and have a talk with Asami, but yeah, comparing him to a guy that's gonna and bombed the city and attacked innocent people? pretty big leap there, tumblr fandom.
I wouldn't be all that surprised if there was a badly designed webpage for Amon's Spiritual Wives out there, haha XD
