SO! I finished the last book of A Song of Ice and Fire a few days ago, and I'm already feeling a bit lost with no more massive intriguing books to read. But I also can't wait for the series! It looks absolutely brilliant.

And now that I finished it I remembered that we won't get to see what happens with this set of characters for god knows how much time, and now I'm CURIOUS about what happens to both queens and Arya and her creepy assassin training and Sansa and her machiavelic new 'father' and stuff (Petyr has always been somewhat creepy, but he's ESPECIALLY creepy around Sansa). I almost wish GRRM had just cut it in two for all characters. AH WELL.

Also, wow, but Cersei's such a bitch in this book. I mean, you can see she loves her children over everything (and her birthright over them), but wow, is she callous. And her double morality in this - how she hates that she won't inherit because she's a woman, and how she's not treated as her father was, but she doesn't care to do the same to others. Margaery's not exactly as sweet as she makes herself to be, but she's downright angelical in comparison. I'm really curious as to who she's sleeping with... Also, I wish we'd gotten at least SOME Loras/Renly scene. I was really hoping we'd get one when Catelyn went into Renly's tent after they'd spent the night together there to 'pray'. Ha, pray, yeah. And it's WEIRD how changed Jaime has ended up being. Did not see that one coming, really.

So while I've missed Jon and Daenerys and Tyrion, the next book will also have a bunch of not so interesting characters, won't it? I mean, Stannis is a bundle of apathy and bitterness, and while Davos is probably the most moral man in the entire series after Eddard Stark (and look where that got him, being slightly nice just gets your head chopped in Westeros), well, he's a bit boring, isn't he? And while I like Daenerys quite a lot, her chapters always happened so far away that it felt like you were being taken away from the plot.

I really want to see Bran again though! I've missed him, and Summer and Meera and Jojen. Does anyone miss Rickon? I want to know if he's still alive though! And I want to see more of ZOMBIE!Catelyn, which, wow, but I did not see coming. And while Brienne chapters were sort of annoying because all she did was wander around and do nothing for the plot, I really don't want her to die. SIGH. (Theon was really annoying as well, insufferable prat that he is. Asha is remarkably cool though.

In any case, I love this series so much. I was spoiled for some stuff, like Drogo and Dany's baby dying, and sort of that Robb was going to die in book 3, but I really wasn't expecting it to be like that (bloodiest wedding ever, man. In hindsight, I love how everyone kept remarking on the musicians playing so badly, lol. And to think I went 'HO, I LIKE HIM when we first met Walder Frey in book 2...) but overall everything was new and surprising and nothing was what I expected. I do love that. Even though I kept hoping for Robb to march into Harrenhall while Arya was working there, or at least for her to see her mother once more, but I can see that these books are pretty much devoted to taking innocent characters and messing up their lives in all ways possible, haha.

I SHARE YOUR FEELINGS!

Except about Dany, because while at first I was like, "WHAT THE HELL? I WAS READING ABOUT POLITICS AND NOW WE HAVE ABUSED CHILD-WOMEN AND BROWN-SKINNED BARBARIANS!" I've really fallen in love with her. If the series doesn't end with her marrying Jon and the two of them fighting the Others, uniting the kingdom and restoring both the peace and House Stark, I shall cry. CRY.

And her double morality in this - how she hates that she won't inherit because she's a woman, and how she's not treated as her father was, but she doesn't care to do the same to others.

I was reading a lot of Tudor biographies at the same time as I read ASoIaF for the first time, so that sort of made sense to me -- it's the way Elizabeth I generally regarded other women. Although Cersei has more in common with Mary Stuart: heaps of raw ability, but no education in how to apply it, and she keeps resorting to sexual/marital ploys that ultimately undermine her.

Yeah, for all that was icky about Dany being pretty much sold to the first bloodthirsty warrior with an army that passed by, I love how she managed to become more powerful and able that, well, everyone else in the series, really. And I was thinking about that the other way, how Dany/Jon in the end make the most sense of everything and hot it'd be AWESOME and needs to happen like yesterday, haha.

It's a really weird and somewhat damaging form of proto-feminism, isn't it? And it's sad because you get to understand why Cersei's the way she is, and there's the sense that she could have been amazing, smart as she is, but she just keeps on choosing the wrong way to go about it.

Oh man, it's been so long since I read ASOIAF -- and it's just so sprawling and soap-operatic that I don't recognise half of these characters you mentioned! Which, not a bad thing, but I am kind of not sure what to do when the next book (finally) comes out. I kind of want to re-read all of the books, but I also kind of don't. :D

Also, I wish we'd gotten at least SOME Loras/Renly scene.

YES. YES I KNOW. Loras/Renly is heartbreaking, but it's such a tiny narrative thread that you have to squint to see.

Haha, I know what you mean, it's so broad and big that it's almost overwhelming! And it's definitely time consuming :3 Still, I'm sure after watching the series you will have remembered all you need for book 5, or there's the ever trusty wikipedia in case you haven't, lol.

At first I was sort o doubting that it was real and not just fangirly rumors, but then I saw that GRRM himself had confirmed it, soooo. If only he didn't forbid fic (which, pretty stupid thing to do, in my books) there could great filling stories about them. And like you said, it'd be so heartbreaking and awesome.

Daenerys rules the world. True story.

But yeah, what I love about the saga is just how many different characters you get and how interesting they are, in all their shades of grey.

...I was gonna comment on the other stuff, but mostly your subject line is the #1 thing I want to happen most in all the books. IF NYMERIA DOESN'T FIND HER HUMAN SOMEDAY, IT WILL ALL HAVE BEEN FOR NOTHING. *cries*

Wait, one more comment:

And I want to see more of ZOMBIE!Catelyn, which, wow, but I did not see coming.

I KNOW. Even though we had already seen the undead in various forms, I was still WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT OMG ZOMBIE!CATELYN IS LEADING A BAND OF VIOLENT CREEPERS. Surprise! :D

That's seriously all I kept thinking when Arya was somewhere remotely close to the Trident, I would be all 'oh god yes now they can find each other and be awesome together!!' and then nothing happened. And the NEXT time I would be like 'NOW it'll happen, definitely!' and I just felt teased, haha. I do love the little tidbits we see of Nymeria being the HBIC of her pack though.

Zombie!Catelyn came out of NOWHERE. Or maybe I hadn't been paying that much attention to the Brienne bits to see if they'd mentioned this Stoneheart character before? (which, not surprising. For all that Brienne is awesome, she's a bit of a dull narrator) And how did she get to be their leader? I though they were into doing whatever Beric Dondarrion said something fierce...

I do love the little tidbits we see of Nymeria being the HBIC of her pack though.

I love that too! Every time somebody mentioned that FEROCIOUS WOLF in the woods, I cheered a little bit. And Arya is across the ocean now, so she's out of reach, but Sansa is still on the right continent... Maybe Nymeria can find her instead? I'm just really sad about the wee Stark girls who don't have wolves, okay!

It'd be so AWESOME if Nymeria found Sansa! Especially as she's in dire need of a true friend these days. It's so sad to have the girls without their wolves, especially seeing how reassuring and important theirs are for the boys. :( Hopefully by the end all the remaining Starks will be having like, dinner or something all together and they'll have snuggly wolves with them! (And if Jon and Dany get together and save the kingdom, I wouldn't be opposed to that, either!)

It would be awesome if Nymeria found Sansa, then ripped Littlefinger's throat out right before Sansa pushed him off a cliff. I'M JUST SAYING. There's a proper way to deal with creepers like that!

That would be the best ending ever! The dragons can burn the ice zombies and they can all live happily ever after with their fluffy wolves!

Too bad everybody is going to DIE HORRIBLY before that happens. :(((((((

(I don't actually think everybody is going to die horribly - surely somebody has to survive, right? my money's on Dany as the Last One Standing, she can survive anything - I just tell myself that as mental preparation.)

posted by [identity profile] nekare.livejournal.com at 04:42am on 12/04/2011
Oh man, yes, Sansa definitely has to rid herself of Littlefinger. I can see why it's in her best interest to stay put for the moment, but it she waits too long Robert will grow up to be an even bigger creep!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Dany's surviving. And possibly Jon, because he seems pretty crucial to the story? (And, let's face it, if Sam survives it'll be sort of a miracle, and someone has to tell how the ice zombies get burnt into crispy crispy dead zombies by the dragons) I just realised that if Jon does end up being Lyanna and Rhaegar's kid, and if he ends up with Dany, they'd still be honoring the incestous Targaryens, haha.

Everyone else though? I'd cry bitterly but wouldn't be surprised to see them die. D:

Forgot to say!

So... is there any outlawed fic around? I feel like I should say this in a whisper and looking dodgily around. Preferably while sitting in a park bench somewhere and wearing a trenchcoat.

You know, I've never actually looked? But there are 200-some stories on AO3, so clearly people are writing it, and posting it. (I imagine there will be HEAPS more after the show airs and people get that "hey, hot guys, what can we make them do?" inspiration that always works so well...)

I wonder what will happen with that, I mean, GRRM is in LJ himself, so it's not like we can just giggle and go 'oh, he'll never notice if we open up a community for hot fic!' soooo. I really wish he wasn't against it, so much could be done with this world. It's not like I wouldn't write it ever, but I'd flock it, and that's no way to make a fandom grow.
