So, while everyone and their mothers are discussing SPN, what is it that I do? Write Who Meta about Mickey. Yeah. I don't really get my brain, either.

I don't know. I was just thinking today, about how Mickey is one of the reasons I trust the show to sometimes Get It Right. Like, I'm not saying he's the best Who character EVAH, OMG, or the best companion, or anything like it, but he is the companion in New Who that gets the most character development.

The first time we see him, he's a Loser, capitalized, and all. He is spineless, simple-minded and the show works hard to sell him as That Nice Bloke You Date Because You're Bored. There's just such a stark contrast between Mickey the Idiot and the Doctor at his most confident and appealing ("Did I mention it also travels in time?"). Rose's decision on going away is a no-brainer, at the time.

The next time we see him, he helps saving the world. He's still not All That, though, he's just suddenly become lovable in our eyes, and worthy of respect in the Doctor's. He's still somewhat whipped by Rose, comes at her every call and tries again and again to make her jealous and really, he does have a point. By this point, he respects the Doctor himself, but the dude sort of stole away his girlfriend, you know? He's entitled to some resentment.

And then the Doctor regenerates and suddenly Mickey the Idiot is an endearment rather than an insult. Nine is wary of Rose's links to Earth, because they're an obstacle for her complete attention - which he craves like mad, still unbalanced from the Time War. Ten... Ten realizes just how deep into his influence he's pulling her, and wants her to get those ties back, even if by that time it's too late.

BUT. This is about Mickey. Mickey likes Ten a lot, too, even if he's not particularly glad about it. It's about this time that he gets over Rose, and is determined not to become the tin dog - and he does it, he becomes a Companion in his own right. And then The Age of Steel/Rise of the Cyberman come and he gets a glimpse of the man he can become, and he sees grief, and his grandma, and a place where he can make a difference. Just in deciding to stay, he's becoming that man, and it marks the moment when that scaredy boy grabbing at Rose's leg in Rose stops being.

I just love his journey, the way he finds himself in another universe, fighting a cause that's not his own but in a way, it is anyway. He's gotten over Rose, gotten over his fears, and he steps up for himself. Oh, the love. By the time we see him in Doomsday (or did he first show up in AoG? I honestly can't remember...), he's just completely kickass and wonderful, and as far away from the tin dog as one can be. (with no offense to K-9, who is sort of awesome itself.)

There's also the fact that he becomes sort-of-but-not-really boyfriends with Jake and they both ride into the sunset to fight cybermen in Paris. If that's not love, then I don't know what it is.

So this is me, saying that the best thing to come out of AoS/RotC was Mickey. I would also say something about Ten in a tux, but he seems to wear one like, every season, so that's an apart, lol.

Who has got it wrong a large number of times, but sometimes, just sometimes, it gets it right, and Mickey is living proof of it. AND IF HE DOESN'T APPEAR IN S4 I MIGHT HAVE TO CHOKE A BITCH, KTHNX.

Also, do people still think Last of the Time Lords was the worst part of S3? Because honestly, I don't consider it all that bad, just a big bundle of what. the fuck. And while weird as fuck, it still gave us some little jewels like Martha being The Awesomest Girl That Ever Awesomed and the Master dancing. Which was, you know, sort of beautiful. Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks, though, was HORRIBLE and deserves a slow, slow death and THAT, for me, is the worst part of S3. Just. Ew. I can't think of that combo and not cringe. *shudder* Ah, first Serial of the Season, why are you always the weakest/lousiest?

S3 certainly had its ups and downs, but the reason I hate Last of the Time Lords most of all is because of the way it ruined the rest of the season for me. Beyond that, that episode soured me so much on the current production staff/writers that I still haven't been able to bring myself to watch Voyage of the Damned -- let alone watch the episodes in reruns. It leads to a feeling of 'what's the point of bothering' and I go drown my sorrows in and Eighth Doctor Adventure.

I have no idea what I'm going to do when S4 starts.

Nice analysis of Mickey. I found him a bit of an annoyance at first, but he really did develop into a great character.

Well I like Last of the Time Lords. Depending on my mood, it's my favourite episode from S3.

I'd like to think Mickey was designed to be annoying at first only to surprise us all with his shiny by the end of S2. I think of how CRUSHED I was when he stayed behind and then remember my GRIMACE of disgust at him in Rose and I just go 'wow' at how much my views on him changed over the series. o_O

You're probably the first person I've ever heard say that. Which brings my hopes up for fandom - so many people went OMG I'M SO OVER WITH DW after it... I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it, and that also seems to be weird within fandom. ;___;

I absolutely adore Mickey; he made the Cyberman serial bearable for me, and I was utterly delighted with him when he was so incredibly hardcore in Doomsday. Plus I ship him and Jake like crazy, in my shallow way.

Basically anything with Simm!Master is good in my book. I think LotTL was a letdown because both Utopia and Sound of Drums were fabulous, but -- I think it followed through on more season arc-y things than people give it credit for, and I like it lots more on rewatch. On the other hand, despite the fact that I think I've deleted the Dalek serial and also mostly hated it, Tallulah and Frank were my favourite one-off characters, so there's something in every episode.

But there's just no way to see them together and not slash them! XD I remember in how much anguish I was when we all thought we'd never see Mickey again, and I remember the way I was so. damn. annoyed by him in Rose and just have to go 'woah.'

But that's the thing - it's not nearly as awful to make people want to swear off the show and Be Miserable For The Rest of Their Lives, like I've seen so many people say. It wasn't all that good, yes, but it wasn't that bad. And yeah, haha, Simm!Master makes everything he touches awesome XD

Yeah, Tallulah and Frank were pretty much the only single thing that made that serial watchable, they were cute together.

Mickey was so annoying at first but he REALLY grew on me in season 2. And just when I decided I loved him HE WENT AWAY!! D: But yeah, he did get the best development.

Also, maybe it's because I watched everything in less than two weeks, but I loved everything and have few complaints about any episode. XD

I think was all a ruse to make us SUFFER for him, yes. If he'd stayed the same, we'd be all OMG GOOD RIDDANCE when he left, lol.

I get the same about the first season, which I watched in less than a week right before S2 started, so I'm all OH THE SHINY about it, even if I know it was still riddled with the same plotholes in S2 and S3. Just wait until S4 starts and the wankfest along with it, it'll be EPIC. Especially because of the SPOILER. You know. THAT one.

For me, Last of the Time Lords was the worst part of S3, because it was connected to so much good stuff - and then failed miserably. I mean, The Lazarus Experiment (which was fun, even with the idiotic 'Rutherford split the atom' remark), 42 (which I liked), Human Nature, Family of Blood, Blink, Utopia, The Sound of Drums... and then LotTL.

Over time, I've come terms with it a bit, but still - the Doctor as messiah and floaty angel thing. That, to me, beats even Helen Raynor.

Yeah, maybe if something as badly written at that had happened at the beginning of the series, it would've passed under the radar with just a bit of hatred. I don't know. I admit it wasn't good, but I think there were some rather lovely moments buried under a pile of crap (like you said: Tinkerbell!Doctor [OH MY GOD THE AWFULNESS] and Dobby!Doctor]).

Oh, Helen Raynor? Haven't heard of her. Details, please? Sounds intriguing XD

Yay Mickey! I agree, I really loved watching him develop into someone whose dramatic reveal in an action sequence could be so exciting and heroic.

As far as Last of the Time Lords go, the Martha segments are some of my favourites of the whole series, and I certainly agree that the stupid Dalek double parter was much, much worse.
