I'm noticing a trend, as of lately. I'm not sure if it's because I've been mainly reading classics in English and contemporary literature in Spanish as of lately, but... women are sometimes better written by Spanish-speaking authors than by their English counterpart. I am not generalizing, okay? I can't say this ALWAYS happens, because it doesn't. But. In pretty much all of the books in Spanish I've been reading for the last, what, year and a half? Women are, if not the main characters, the main drive of the story, what makes it tick. It's not always good women, or even smart or compassionate or kick ass women, but mainly, strong, real human beings.

I have the feeling this has a lot to do with upbringing. Women are a weird dichotomy for men, here in Latin America. There's few places where there's more machismo than in here, and yet, we worship the Virgin Mary and assorted female saints more than we do God, and the worst insult possible is 'puta madre' or 'chinga tu madre' (according to locality) - you do not mess with the women in someone else's life, that's something you learn from birth, which is both degrading and uplifting and so very confusing, much like this place. That's why I've never really gotten the 'and your mother' jokes in the US - it IS serious business in here.

A year ago, an Italian singer bitched about how Mexican women were ugly and had moustaches (lol). There was an OUTRAGE. Women mostly snickered, but men? Men started demanding the dude would never again step on Mexican soil. There's a certain fascination with all things female in here, that steems from the total worshipping we have of mothers in here.

So I guess... it reflects in literature? )

Mmm, I'm not sure I'm explaining myself all that well. SO ANYWAY. Rec me good books in English that feature that feature women so wonderful it hurts? Because I know they're out there, but I sure haven't been reading them as of lately. Woe.

So, while everyone and their mothers are discussing SPN, what is it that I do? Write Who Meta about Mickey. Yeah. I don't really get my brain, either.

Pseudo meta on Mickey and character development and why I still have faith in Who, sometimes. )

Also, do people still think Last of the Time Lords was the worst part of S3? Because honestly, I don't consider it all that bad, just a big bundle of what. the fuck. And while weird as fuck, it still gave us some little jewels like Martha being The Awesomest Girl That Ever Awesomed and the Master dancing. Which was, you know, sort of beautiful. Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks, though, was HORRIBLE and deserves a slow, slow death and THAT, for me, is the worst part of S3. Just. Ew. I can't think of that combo and not cringe. *shudder* Ah, first Serial of the Season, why are you always the weakest/lousiest?

Argh, I tried doing my dad's famous salsa, which includes a 'sofrito' (chopped onion sauted in oil), but to no avail. It was so bland. ;___; I must get him to teach me exactly how to fix it, because I loooove it like a burning thing. Speaking of: seeing the success of the enchiladas post, I'll be doing a taco version, haha XD

Well, it appears everyone and their mothers BUT me have seen the newest Torchwood ep. I just haven't felt like it, but I have to get on with it because that's exactly what happened last year: I saw the first three eps, didn't see Cyberwoman and didn't finish the series until six months later. But this time? This time I want to lulz with all of you guys. Yeah, cheap lulz are pretty much the only reason I watch this show. Which is okay, because that it does well.

And now for the SPN thoughts, with no spoilers whatsoever *shocked gasp* for S3.

girl!Sam vs. girl!Dean. MY PSEUDO META, LET ME SHOW YOU IT. )

And now I want more Deangirl. I DEMAND SOME. I should also use this space to say that [livejournal.com profile] sazzlette's Deangirl ROCKS MY FUCKING WORLD. OMG. SO DAMN GOOD.

MY THOUGHTS, LET ME SHOW YOU THEM.

You know, I hate it when the insane part of the Rose fans keep on saying 'OH, BUT MARTHA DOESN'T RESPECT THE MEMORY OF ROSE!' Well of course she doesn't - why should she?

The Doctor flirts with her from the first second. He kisses her the very first day they meet (genetical transfer or not), and he goes on about how brilliant she is. He looks like a young, attractive man and is the epitome of intriguing - this is human nature, folks. Getting a crush on someone like that is perfectly natural.

And then she gets the 'OH, ROSE WAS BETTER THAN YOU, BTW, KTHNX' treatment. Over, and over again. This is someone she has never met, she has never seen, and yet all she does is hear about how much like perfection this Rose was - she's still nursing a crush, so of course she's not going to be all 'oh, yes, definitely, Doctor, she must have been so amazing if you tell me so!' she'd obviously get irritated. Again, it's only natural. Martha has every right to be angry at the way the Doctor compares her to someone else, as if she wasn't enough of a companion.

So I don't see the fuzz about it. If anything, it was Martha the one that got the shorter stick in this deal, not Rose's Holy Memory, and I have the feeling that if both of these gals ever met, they'd like each other, and more than that, they'd realize how much of an asshole the Doctor can be.

Rose was wonderful. She was brave, loyal and warm, but this image the Doctor seems to have of her just doesn't sound like Rose in the least - Rose didn't always know what to do, Rose was most definitely not perfect. Why, then, he carries such a memory of Saint Rose the Martyr with him? He misses Rose, alright, but more than that, he misses the idea of her, of a companion that would keep him happy at all times and wouldn't force him to see his flaws and his angst and realize how messed up about Gallifrey he really is.

Both Donna and Martha did this, in their own ways, and right about time, too, because he was refusing to see the issue.

Rose was good for Nine. Nine was... unstable, and needed someone to hold on to. Ten isn't as nearly as close to the edge as Nine was, and in the end, Rose wasn't good for Ten and Ten was definitely not good for Rose (it's arguable, though, how good the Doctor is to any of his companions - he leaves a wake of broken people on his travels). What Ten needs is a good slap for him to go back into reality, and that, kids, is why Donna is awesome, lol.
