I watched The Dark Knight last night. HOLY SHIT, GUYS. I got the chills, that's how fucking incredible it was. It was just delightfully disturbing and real feeling – I love it when superhero stories (or fantasy, for that matter) is solidly grounded on reality; that’s why I loved Watchmen as much as I did, I guess. In all, it was claustrophobic, horrifying and utterly fantastic. That feeling of panic, and how morally complex it was. Batman Begins was good, but this is years ahead of it, in every way.
This makes Heath Ledger’s death even more tragic, though, because his Joker was absolutely amazing. He seriously scared me. I’m so glad they replaced Katie Holmes, too. My brother kept on bitching about how Maggie Gyllenhall isn’t pretty enough, but screw him, at least she can act. Her Rachel was kinda endearing, I was pretty shocked at her being killed. I totally didn’t expect Cillian Murphy to return! Even if it was in a five second cameo, lol. Still! You can’t go wrong with Cillian Murphy, no way.
It was so tense, I was at the edge of my seat all through it. The way it played on people’s panic and morals was just superb (the boat dilemma, and the whole ‘you either kill the guy or I blow the hospital’, my God), the action was good, the effects incredibly and now I just can’t wait to see it again. :D :D :D
The only thing that doesn’t sit well with me is the decision to turn Barbara into Comissioner Gordon’s wife. It’s just – Barbara is probably my favorite super heroine ever, and I’m talking as someone who usually takes Marvel over DC any day. Ah, well. It’s not like either Batgirl or Robin can fit into this universe, anyway, unless you were trying to recreate The Killing Joke, aaaaand, er, no Joker. So.
In all honesty, I kinda hope that Justice League movie won’t happen. I just have the feeling it’d be the campiest thing ever created, and that’d be… well, embarrassing, after this one.
A small confession: I only watched Batman Begins once and thought it was okay but nothing special. I hardly remember what happened in it. ER. I might have to watch it again. (In IMAX this time, even if it's so damn expensive. IT CALLS FOR IT.)
I’ve been in the mood for painful, unhealthy and doomed romance, along with being in the mood for Clamp, so I went and read Tokyo Babylon. It’s so weird, but I’d never finished it (I only got through the first volume, I think?), and yet I liked it lots. The final volume might be painpainbloodpainsakuraspain, but even the first, cheerful volumes are sort of depressing, knowing how it all ends. Jeez, no wonder Subaru and Kamui get along so well, that with their angst and their evil sort-of-boyfriends.
I think I’ll be re-reading all of X one of these days. It’s been far too long.
ETA: ZOMG, YOU GUYS, HAVE YOU SEEN THE WATCHMEN TRAILER? ASLFJA;LSJF, SO FUCKING AMAZING.

I thought Batman Begins was great -- but yes, TDK is head and shoulders above it in all ways. No wonder it's breaking records left and right!

And I watched Batman Begins on a loop for about 2 months after it first showed so I didn't even know if this could top it but IT DID IT DID.
I'm stoked for Watchmen. Really.

You know, they've been careful *not* to mention the name of Gordon's daughter. We know the son's name is James Gordon, Jr., but the girl? Nothing. It's not that uncommon for girls to be named after their mothers, so it's always a possibility that she's still going to grow up to be Batgirl.
ETA: Actually, come to think of it, wasn't Gordon's wife named Barbara in one of the canons? I can't remember if it was some of the comics or maybe one of the animated series, but I would have sworn that at one point that was the case.

Batman: Year One.

Mmm, well, that's something, at least. I'll still take offense in that they chose to showcase the INVENTED nobody boy instead of Babs. Bah.

What I especially liked:
1) involving the audience in fear and suspicion and all that
2) while the Joker was the catalyst for things, there was a good amount of focus shared between the three leads, as well as little shine parts for Alfred and Lucius
